Additive manufacturing and 3d printing

During 2012, 3D printing had a high media profile, with stories covering the use of 3D printing in luxury car manufacture, biomedical engineering and for hobbies. This excitable media attention included many predictions about the transformative potential of the technology.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is carrying out a project on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, which will explore where the real gains are likely to be; what the timescales are for the roll out of the technology in different sectors and what might be the most beneficial applications for the technology in the UK. This will be of value in guiding government strategies for additive manufacturing, setting the research agenda and aiding innovation efforts.

The project will begin with an expert roundtable in May 2013 (by invitation only) with a report to be launched publicly later in the year.

The project is due to complete by autumn 2013.

Any inquiries about the study should be addressed to Philippa Shelton.
