There are a number of good books on various aspects of ethics as they affect engineers, from the social implications of technology change to the risks of complex technology in inadequate organizations.

“Ethics in Engineering Practice and Research”, by Dr Caroline Whitbeck, Cambridge University Press, 1998, ISBN 0 521 47944 4. This provides a good foundation to the practical problems of ethics for engineers.

There is also a website at Caroline’s University, Case Western Reserve, that provides additional material and links.

“Social, Ethical and Policy Implications of Engineering” by Joseph Herkert, IEEE Press, 2000, ISBN 0 7803 4712 9 provides additional material in the form of papers on many subjects. Readers who are less interested in the social impact of technology change and political philosophy will wish to start with Part II at p75, where the editor moves on from political viewpoints to more concrete questions. Those who wish to participate in debate will find Part I useful also.

Intellectual property raises ethical questions that you may wish to explore. The basis for these is introduced in the first two chapters of “Basics of International Intellectual Property Law” by G Gregory Letterman, Transnational Publishers, 2001, ISBN 1 57105 207 0.
