Autonomous Systems
A discussion document on the
social, legal and ethical issues surrounding the
development and use of autonomous systems was
launched in August 2009. The document is the report
of a roundtable discussion from a wide range of
experts, looking at the areas where autonomous
systems are most likely to emerge first, and
discussing the broad ethical issues surrounding
their uptake.
Tips for Teaching Engineering Ethics
On April 10th a workshop on
teaching engineering ethics was held at the
Interdisciplinary Ethics Applied Centre for
Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the
University of Leeds. At this workshop, a number of
teachers of engineering ethics shared their
experiences of how to incorporate ethics into the
engineering degree and generated a number of ideas
of how to teach engineering ethics effectively.
Engineering Ethics and Accreditation
On March 14th, The Royal
Academy of Engineering and ECUK held a one-day work
shop on Engineering Ethics and Accreditation. The
workshop discussed how to incorporate ethics into
the engineering degree and how accrediting
institutions can ensure that ethics is covered

A one-day conference on
‘Engineering Ethics in Practice’ was held on June
13th 2007. A copy of the keynote speeches, by John
Armitt CBE FREng and Sara Parkin OBE is available at

The Academy held its
first engineering ethics conference in October
2005, at which the original statement of ethical
principles was launched. The proceedings of this

Risk and Safety
The Academy also has ongoing
activities on risk in engineering. Information about

The Academy is running a
