Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
Frequently Asked Questions
Host
Q27. Can I apply for a secondment in a company based overseas?
A27. No, not under this scheme, although occasional visits overseas
as part of a UK based secondment are allowed. Please visit
http://www.raeng.org.uk/research/researcher/global/
for more information about The Academy’s international Global Research Awards instead.
Q28. Does the size of the Host company matter?
A28. Applications can be considered for a secondment in a
Host company of any size. The environment in which the secondee works, however,
should enable a suitable appreciation to be gained of the pressures and realities
of the industrial/commercial world. Such an appreciation can be passed on to
undergraduates/postgraduates to enable them to have a better understanding of
what is expected of them when they eventually move into a similar environment.
Q29. Is the Host organization expected to contribute to the secondee’s costs?
A29. Contributions towards costs from the host organisation, while not a
compulsory part of the scheme, are nevertheless welcome both as a contribution to funds and as an
indicator of goodwill. These may be in the form of a payment towards the applicant’s travel,
accommodation and subsistence, or in the form of a cash contribution towards the salary of the applicant.
In some cases Host organisations make a cash contribution to The Academy to help finance further secondments.
Q30. Can I go on secondment to a company in which I have an equity stake?
A30. The scheme is not open to applications from academics wishing to
go on a secondment to a company in which they have an equity stake. The funds come from public
sources in the form of grant-in-aid and as such cannot be used to benefit the private arrangements of secondees.
Q31. Can I go to a non-industrial Host organization?
A31. Applications for secondments to non-industrial Host organisations are
accepted providing the experience gained will impact directly on the courses the applicant teaches.
For example, a secondment was approved to a hospital, applying mechanical engineering techniques to
the treatment of spinal injury patients, and to a local authority for work in the area of environmental engineering.
Q32. Can I go on secondment to more than one Host organization?
A32. Yes, if it can be demonstrated that this will provide added value to the
secondment, but it is unusual.
Q33. Can The Academy help me to find a Host organisation?
A33. Applicants are normally expected to find their own Host organisation
but -where possible- The Royal Academy of Engineering may assist in this process using its own database.
