Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
Frequently Asked Questions
Application
Q17. What type of documents do I need to apply and where can I get these from?
A17. A completed application form should be submitted to the Scheme Manager
together with a curriculum vitae, a personal statement outlining the nature and objectives of the
proposed secondment, a work programme, a letter of support from your Head of Department, a letter
of support from your Host organisation and a letter from your employer detailing the funds required
to replace your teaching and teaching-related duties.
The application form and the guidelines can be downloaded from
http://www.raeng.org.uk/research/univ/secondment/. Further information is also available from the Scheme Manager.
Q18. How are the applications assessed and how long does the application process last for?
A18. After an initial assessment by The Royal Academy of Engineering,
selected candidates are called for an interview normally within 4 to 5 weeks from the date of
the receipt of the application packs. A decision is normally conveyed to the applicant within
24 hours of the interview. The university department and the award holder are notified of the
outcome of the application in writing by the scheme manager. At the time of the award notification
all parties are required to sign an Agreement detailing the terms and conditions of the award.
Q19. Can I apply for a 6-month full-time secondment and spend 3 months in
the Host organisation this summer and another 3 months next summer?
A19. Yes, as long as the secondment adheres to the
aims and objectives of the scheme, a modular approach is accepted. The intention
to go on a secondment on a modular basis should be declared and justified at application stage.
Q20. I wish to apply for an 80% part-time secondment. Can I continue to teach
one-day per week or do I have to stop teaching altogether?
A20. As long as you give a full commitment to the aims and
objectives of your secondment for the remaining 4 days per week, you may continue to
teach modules for one day per week. Your intention to do so, however, must be declared
to The Academy at application stage.
Q21. I can’t decide between full-time and part-time secondment.
Which one shall I go for?
A21. A full-time secondment ensures that you are totally
committed to the secondment and its aims and objectives and as such it is the preferred
mode by our applicants and host organisations. It is recognised, however, that in certain
circumstances (involving for example family reasons or the difficulty in finding a
replacement for highly specialised teaching and/or research) part-time secondments
are more appropriate. The applicant will need to convince the Interview Panel of the
need for and benefits of a part-time mode, indicating the support of the Host and Employer.
Q22. Can I have a secondment for longer than six months on a full-time basis?
A22. Yes, if this has the agreement of the applicant’s Head of
Department and the Host organization. The Academy could only provide funding for six months,
however, and alternative sources of funding will need to be secured for the remaining period.
Q23. Are there any guidelines for the personal statement and support letters?
A23. Yes. Please refer to the scheme information at
http://www.raeng.org.uk/research/
Q24. I was awarded an Industrial Secondment award long time ago but did
not submit one of my reports. Can I apply for a secondment again?
A24. You are not eligible to apply since you have not completed
your previous secondment. As stated in the scheme Agreement your previous secondment is
considered completed only after the Secondee and Host reports have been completed to
The Academy’s satisfaction.
Q25. Can I submit my documents online?
A25. Yes, you can submit your documents as an attachment to an e-mail.
Although applications are accepted either electronically (i.e. as
attachments to e-mails) or in paper form (but not both), the electronic submission method
is the preferred method for this scheme. Please note that the original, headed-paper
versions of the letters of support from your Head of Department, your Host and the
Finance will be required from award holders.
Q26. Is there a closing date for applications?
A26. This varies from year to year. Please contact the Scheme Manager
(Tel 020 77 66 0600, E-mail: imren.markes@raeng.org.uk ) for details.
