Excellence in Teaching Awards: Instructions for Referees

ExxonMobil in partnership with The Royal Academy of Engineering has established these awards to identify and reward Centres of Engineering Teaching Excellence in the UK. Whilst the university department is the major beneficiary of the award, the application focuses on the merits of a specific member of staff. The application process is competitive and only the best applicants will be selected.

In judging each application the Assessors will be looking for evidence of an established and demonstrable track record. This may be achieved by such details as:

  • a strong and continuing commitment to teaching and professional activities;

  • leading or participating in activities both within and outside of academia that promote engineering as a rewarding and creative career;

  • leading or participating in activities that establish and fully exploit industrial-academic links;

  • evidence of recognition and respect for teaching ability from within their department.

As part of the application process we request supporting letters from two referees in addition to a confidential citation from the Head of Department. As a nominated Referee we would be grateful to receive your opinion on the suitability of the applicant in question for a prize. The selection criteria detailed above will hopefully provide a useful guide for composing your letter of support otherwise please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Letters should be sent to Ian Bowbrick and arrive no later than 14 October 2011.
