Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
International Travel Grants
Applications for 2008 are now closed.
The International Travel Grant Scheme is intended to help Engineering Researchers in the
UK make study visits overseas. This enables them to remain at the forefront of new developments and be aware of corresponding activity overseas.
The scheme is intended to benefit individuals with their current work and ultimately engineering in the country as a whole
by facilitating technology transfer opportunities. It is also a means of maintaining the prestige of the nation’s engineering overseas.
Who may apply
The scheme is open to postgraduate students, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers,
academic staff involved in research, in UK higher education institutions and
chartered engineers in UK industry.
To be eligible for funding applicants must be
UK citizens or permanent residents. There are no age restrictions. The scheme is not open to Fellows of The Royal Academy of Engineering.
Nature of the visit
Awards may be sought for the following activities:

Attendance at Conferences, particularly where the applicant is presenting a paper or poster.

Attendance at Summer Schools where the subject matter is related to the applicant’s area of research interest.

Research Visits to institutions or universities for the purpose of collaborative work or to use specialist equipment.

Field Visits to industrial sites or areas of specialist interest.
Duration and Frequency of Visits
Visits of up to two months are eligible. Only one visit per year per applicant is usually funded, although consideration may be given to a second visit in cases of exceptional merit or circumstance.
Cost associated with the visit
Grants of up to 50% of approved costs may be awarded to applicants.

Applicants are required to seek additional funding from appropriate sources including their university or employer.

applicants and complete an
application form.
In addition applicants will be required to submit
electronically the following to complete their applications:

An abstract of the paper or poster to be presented, if the applicant is attending a conference;

A list of previous publications;
-
A paragraph of no more than 200 words justifying the relevance of the visit to their current work;

A copy of the personal details page of their passport or documentation pertaining to permanent resident status.
In addition applicants are required to nominate two referees on their application form who are able to comment on the merits of their visit. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the Academy receives both
referees' reports.
Applications which are not complete before the intended date of departure will not be considered for funding.
Applicants are urged to submit their application at the earliest convenience, ideally
six weeks prior to the departure date. Applications can be considered at any time during the year.

Obtained
Recipients of grants
are responsible for ensuring that
information obtained during visits is
appropriately disseminated in the UK to
ensure that maximum benefit accrues from
their visit. The checklists

first major conference' and
'reporting on your
first major conference' have been prepared to
help awardees make the most out of their
visits and prepare a suitable report for
submission to the Academy upon their return which will be published in
The Delegate, the scheme's monthly newsletter.
