Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
Research Exchanges with China and India
Scheme
The scheme funds two types of Awards: Short and Major Awards.
Short Awards support visits of up to one month and are
primarily for exploratory or networking visits. Short Awards cover ‘out of pocket’
expenses, primarily travel and accommodation costs, of up to £3,000.
Major Awards support visits of 3-12 months and should
be part of longer-term efforts to build UK-China/India partnerships. Major
Awards provide funding at a flat rate of £22,000 per annum (or pro rata
for shorter visits) regardless of the direction of travel.
Joint (two-way) Exchanges are also possible
for both Short and Major Awards. These allow a researcher at a UK-based
Institution to travel to a Chinese/Indian Institution and also for a
China/India based researcher at that Institution to travel to the same UK
Institution. The total funding available for a Joint Exchange is the
same as for a single Award.
Eligibility
The scheme is open to all
academic engineering researchers at post-doctoral
level or above. Applicants should have an excellent
track record in research. Industrial researchers and
establishments are not eligible
Applicants must be citizens of
the UK (or EU)/China/India respectively. Non-EU
citizens can apply to go to China/India provided
they have held a salaried research position at a UK
Institution for at least three consecutive years by
31 Dec 2008. Non-Indian or non-Chinese citizens
living in those countries can apply to visit the UK
providing they have held a salaried research
position at an Indian/Chinese research Institution
for at least three consecutive years by the same
date.
Applications are welcomed from all areas
of research, especially those broadly related to energy and climate
change, health and wellbeing and poverty reduction.
