Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
RAEng/EPSRC Research Fellowships
Application Limits
There has been a long standing
issue regarding the very high demand for this scheme
which results in well over 100 applications being
received each Call for an average of 10 awards. The
estimated cost of preparing and peer reviewing a
single proposal for administrators and reviewers is
approximately £10,000 . This cost highlights the
severe burden a high number of applications with
consequentially low success rate places on all
stakeholders including applicants and institutions.
The RAEng and EPSRC have
decided to implement a management process to
streamline the peer review process and have imposed
a limit on the number of applications that can be
submitted by a single Host Organisation in this
year’s Call (2009-10).
The maximum number of
applications that can be submitted for this scheme
from most Host Organisations is now two (see below
for exceptions). If we receive more than the
permitted number of applications from a single Host
Organisation, they will be asked to withdraw
applications exceeding this limit.
This limit was selected
because in a majority of the previous rounds the
highest number of Fellowships awarded to a single
Host Organisation was two. By implementing a limit
of two applications the opportunity to receive this
maximum number of Fellowships still remains.
This scheme is aimed at the
very best engineers working in research from across
the UK. Host Organisations are therefore expected to
select and put forward only those applications that
they consider to be of a highly competitive
standard.
Exceptions
In an effort to recognise Host
Organisations that have an established track record
of success, those that have been awarded three or
more Fellowships in the last five years are
permitted to submit an additional application
(three in total). These Host Organisations are
listed below:
2005-09
-
Imperial College London
-
Queen Mary, University of London
-
University of Cambridge
-
University College London
-
University of Edinburgh
-
University of Oxford
-
University of Southampton
Note: It is expected
that the composition of this list will evolve with
each completed round as the five year track record
is updated; this list should be checked by all Host
Organisations with the announcement of any
successive calls.
