Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships Scheme: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the aims of Fellowship?

To relieve mid-career academics of their administrative and teaching responsibilities for between one academic term and one year, allowing them to concentrate full-time on engineering research and to rejuvenate their research career. The Fellowships also provide an opportunity for junior academics to gain valuable teaching and lecturing experience.

2. When is the closing date for applications?

5pm on Monday 19 November 2012.

3. How many Fellowships are available each year?

Up to 7 Fellowships are available annually.

4. Which areas of research are eligible?

All engineering disciplines are eligible.

5. Where can I get copies of the Application Form and guidance notes?

6. Are there any age/experience limits for the Fellowship?

There are no age limits for the Fellowships but applicants should have a substantial career ahead of them in which to implement the benefits and outcomes of the fellowship.

7. Are there nationality or other eligibility requirements?

There are no nationality restrictions but applicants must currently hold a permanent position within their proposed UK institution.

8. What does the Fellowship provide for?

The Fellowship contributes to the salary costs (including pension, NI and any pay awards) of a junior academic who will take over all non-research related activities of the Fellow for the duration of the Fellowship.

Up to £2,500 is also available to the Fellow to cover miscellaneous research costs, such as conference attendance.

9. What is the duration of the Fellowship?

They can be for a period of between one academic term and one year.

10. What is the assessment process and schedule?

The schedule will be as follows:

Feb 2013 All applicants informed of the outcome of their application

11. What happens after an offer has been made?

After an offer has been made the employing institution will be required to confirm the commitments from which the Fellowship holder is to be relieved, the arrangements for recruiting the replacement academic and the anticipated start date of the Fellowship.

Subsequently, the Academy must be notified of the proposed replacement academic and their CV must be submitted to the Academy for formal approval by The Leverhulme Trust, prior to commencement of the Fellowship.

12. When can the Fellowship commence?

All Fellowships awarded in February 2013 must commence no later than October 2013

13. Can the Fellowship be transferred?

No, the Fellowship must be held at the institution where the applicant is currently employed and it cannot be transferred to another individual or institution.

14. Can the Fellowship be extended?

Extensions to the Fellowship are not permitted.

15. How will The Academy monitor my progress?

The Fellowship holder will be expected to submit an interim progress report to The Academy midway through the course of the Fellowship. A final report must be submitted to The Academy no later than 3 months after the completion of the Fellowship.
