Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships Scheme: Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the
aims of The Royal Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme
Trust Senior Research Fellowships Scheme
These Fellowships allow
mid-career academics to be relieved of their
administrative and teaching responsibilities for
between one academic term and 12 months, to
concentrate their efforts on full time engineering
research. They also provide an opportunity for a
junior academic to gain teaching and lecturing experience.

5pm on Friday 23rd October 2009.
3. How many
Fellowship are available each year?
Up to 7 Fellowships
are available annually.
4. Which areas
of research are eligible?
The Fellowships can be
within any engineering discipline.
5. Where can I get

6. Are there any
age/experience limits for the Fellowship?
There are no age
limits for the Fellowships, but ideally applicants
will be mid-career and with a substantial career
ahead of them.
7. Are there
nationality or other eligibility
requirements?
There are no
nationality restrictions, but applicants
must hold a permanent position in a UK
university.
8. What does the
Fellowship provide for?
The Fellowship covers the
gross salary costs of a replacement academic.
A sum of up to £2,500
(‘Support Fund’) may also be made available to the
researcher to cover miscellaneous costs.
9. What is the duration of
the Fellowship?
The Fellowships are
awarded for a period of between one academic
term and twelve months.
10. What is the assessment process and schedule?
The applications are
reviewed by a panel of six Fellows of The Academy
who assess several key areas. A copy of the reviewers form is available for
information.

11. What happens
after an offer has been made?
After an offer has been made
to a successful candidate, the employing institution
will be required to submit to The Academy a letter
confirming the duties from which the
Fellowship-holder is to be relieved, the
arrangements for recruiting the replacement, and the
anticipated start date.
Subsequently, The Academy must
be notified of the proposed replacement academic
after the Fellowship has been awarded and a CV
should be submitted to The Academy for formal
approval by The Leverhulme Trust.
12. When can the
Research Fellowship commence?
All Fellowships awarded in
April 2010 must commence no later than 31 March
2011. Usually these Fellowships will commence at the
beginning of October of the year in which they are
awarded.
13. Can the Fellowship be Transferred?
No, the Fellowship must be
held at the university where the applicant is
currently employed. The Fellowship cannot be
transferred to another university or to a new
incumbent.
14. Can the
Fellowship be extended?
Extensions to the
Fellowship are not permitted. Funding is for
the total period agreed at the outset of the
award.
15. How will The
Academy monitor my progress?
The incumbent will be expected
to submit an interim progress report to The Academy
midway through the course of the Fellowship. The
incumbent will submit a final report not later than
3 months following completion of the Fellowship.
