Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
Distinguished Visiting Fellowship Scheme
How to Apply
Applications for Distinguished
Visiting Fellowship awards are accepted from the
host organizations in the United Kingdom. The
application pack consists of the following
documents:
The prime purpose of the
application form is to identify why the nominated
visitor and university department deserve to be
supported under the scheme and how the host
institution intends to maximise the benefits gained.
Although applications are
accepted either electronically (e.g. as attachments
to e-mails) or in paper form (but not both), the
electronic submission method is the preferred method
for this scheme. Please note that the original of
the cover letter of support from the Head of
Department will be required from award holders.
Incomplete applications
will not be processed.
Eligibility
All engineering departments in
the UK Higher Education institutions are eligible to
apply. Whilst the Fellowships are intended to favour
aspects of engineering and technology, the
assessment panel will also give sympathetic
consideration to proposals from related disciplines
(e.g. within the generality of ICT and materials)
where a convincing case for support is made.
Applications from private or commercial centres of
excellence are not accepted.
Applications with visitors
from overseas academic centres of excellence in
engineering (including those from governmental
research organizations) are accepted. Visitors from
private or commercial centres of excellence are not
eligible for this scheme.
Assessment of Applications
An assessment panel consisting
of Fellows of The Academy will meet normally within
one month of the deadline for applications to
determine the successful applicants.
In judging and ranking
applications the selection panel will take into
account a number of factors. These include:
-
The eminence and seniority
of the selected visitor and the potential for a
valuable contribution to the host organisation
(as well as to the engineering in the UK).
-
Quality and feasibility of
the proposed programme of work, collaboration
and dissemination activities.
-
The strength of support for the application.
-
The potential for future links, collaboration and networking.
The award holder’s university
department will be notified of the successful
outcome of the assessment in writing by the Scheme
Manager normally within one month of the date of the
assessment panel’s meeting. At the time of the award
notification all parties will be required to sign an
Agreement detailing the Terms and Conditions of the
award.
Arrangements for the Visit
All arrangements for the visit
of an approved Distinguished Visiting Fellow will be
made by the host institution.
Deadline for Applications
There are two rounds of
applications. The deadline for the submission of the
first round of applications is the end of June. The
deadline for the second round of applications is the
end of October.
