Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
Research Chairs: How To Apply
Enquiries are welcome
from individuals, UK-based university
departments or industries interested in the
scheme. However, the final proposal must be
submitted by the appropriate Head of
Department at the host university.
Under normal circumstances,
The Academy requires that all new Research Chairs be advertised in
order to attract the most experienced
individual for the appointment. However,
existing members of staff may be encouraged
to apply if appropriate and will be assessed
in competition with any other suitable
candidates.
See 'Assessment of
proposal and applicant' for details.
Case for support
The case for support
should be typed using a font such as Times
New Roman, 12 point. It should include:
-
details of the generic
programme of research proposed, including
the broad workplan for the five year period
and specific deliverables anticipated
-
details of how the
Fellowship will fit into the research
strategy of the university and industrial
sponsor
-
an outline of the
ideal person specification and, if desired,
a full curriculum vitae (including
publications and grants) of a nominated
candidate
-
a statement of the
relevance of the research to other
organisations
-
a statement outlining
the added value that would accrue from the
Academy funding
-
a financial statement
which includes the relevant cost elements, e.g.
gross salary, indirect costs and estates
-
a statement of plans
after the five year period (e.g. will the
appointment be made permanent at the
university?)
-
letters of support
from the industrial sponsor(s) and
university Head of Department
-
a statement addressing
the Intellectual Property Rights
arrangements agreed between the university
and industrial sponsor(s)
-
details of any
additional support from the university,
industrial sponsor or other sources (e.g.
additional staff, equipment, facilities)

Academy of Engineering (see “Further
