Sir Frank Whittle Medal

For an outstanding and sustained engineering achievement contributing to the well-being of the nation

Rules and Conditions

In 2010 the Medal will be awarded for Engineering Innovations in International Development.

  1. Nominations are invited for the Royal Academy of Engineering Sir Frank Whittle Medal to be awarded in 2009. Self nominations are not acceptable.

  2. The Award will consist of a Silver Gilt Medal.

  3. The Medal is awarded to an engineer, normally resident in the United Kingdom, for outstanding and sustained achievement which has contributed to the well-being of the nation.

  4. The field of activity changes annually and in 2010 the Sir Frank Whittle Medal is to be awarded for engineering innovations in International Development. Such engineering innovations may be through the application of technologies (systems, processes, devices) and may include physical infrastructure.

  5. The recipient of the Sir Frank Whittle Medal will be selected by the Council of The Royal Academy of Engineering on the recommendation of the Awards Committee.

  6. One Medal will be awarded annually. The Medal will not be awarded if in any year the Council so decides.

  7. The winner of the Sir Frank Whittle Medal will be announced by press release. On receipt of the award, the winner will be expected to present a keynote address outlining their experience in the field of engineering innovations for the environment. The keynote address may take the form of a public lecture and/or a workshop.

  8. Submissions should be made on the accompanying nomination form and sent to The Royal Academy of Engineering and must give the following information:

    1. Particulars of individual engineer including full name, date of birth, address, appointment and academic and professional qualifications;

    2. Citation/summary of not more than 500 words describing the nature and technical excellence of the outstanding and sustained engineering achievement and how it is contributing or has contributed to the well-being of the nation;

    3. A curriculum vitae of no more than two pages should be attached.

    4. Letters of support from two referees should be attached.

  9. Only completed nominations will be considered. Please ensure that the nomination form is complete with CV and letters of support at the time of submission.

  10. Submissions must arrive no later than Friday 6 November 2009.
