The Prince Philip Medal
(solid gold)
In 1989 HRH The Prince
Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Senior Fellow of
The Royal Academy of of Engineering, agreed to the
commissioning of a gold medal to be ‘awarded
biennially to an engineer of any
nationality who has made an exceptional
contribution to engineering as a whole
through practice, management or education’,
to be known as the Prince Philip Medal.
The Prince Philip Medal will not
be awarded in 2013. The call for nominations for the
2014 award will open later this year.

Naeem Hussain
Global Bridge Design Practice Leader, Arup
Awarded for his groundbreaking
work on some of the world’s most iconic bridges. His
portfolio includes the world’s second longest
cable-stay Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong, the
multi award-winning Hulme Arch Bridge in Manchester
and the Oresund road and rail crossing between
Sweden and Denmark.

2010
Professor John Davidson FREng FRS
Professor Davidson has made
major contributions to chemical engineering on a
global scale, most notably in the area of research
in multi-phase flow in fluidisation and bubble flow,
publishing over 250 papers in this field. He is
currently working on key projects such as clean coal
combustion which looks to underpin the design of
zero-emission coal-fired power plants.

Ron Dennis
Recognising him for his
leadership and entrepreneurial skills in building
the McLaren Group into a major international brand.
Through his leadership he has not only contributed
to the discipline of engineering but also to the
public perception of engineering inspiring future
young engineers in the process.

Olek Zienkiewicz CBE FREng FRS
The Academy is to confer its
Prince Philip Medal to Professor Zienkiewicz,
Emeritus Professor and former Director of the
Institute for Numerical Methods in Engineering at
the University of Wales, Swansea. He is widely
regarded as the "Father of the Finite Element
Method", for outstanding contributions spanning the
wide field of mechanics and engineering
