Picture of a gas-filled vacuum recloserPole-mounted autoreclosing circuit breakers are used to protect sections of the overhead line power supply network. These supply networks are subject to frequent faults and people living in remote areas often have to cope with extensive power cuts. An autorecloser works by disconnecting the power supply when a fault is detected, thus preventing power surges which would damage electrical equipment. Most faults are only temporary and autoreclosers are designed to reconnect the supply after a short interruption. Conventional designs are very unreliable, require frequent maintenance, and need large amounts of power.

Whipp & Bourne's new pole-mounted circuit breaker, the Gas-Filled Vacuum Recloser (GVR), will increase the reliability of the power supply networks in remote areas, greatly reducing the frequency of power cuts. It is maintenance-free, has an independent power supply which will last for a minimum of 10 years, is smaller than competing designs and only 1/3 of the weight, which makes it easier to install and less environmentally obtrusive.
