MacRobert Award

Rules and Conditions

  1. The Award will be made annually by The Royal Academy of Engineering (the Academy) to an organisation in recognition of an outstanding innovation in the field of engineering that has achieved commercial success and which is of benefit to the community.

  2. Engineering is taken to include any application of the natural sciences.

  3. The organisation must nominate no more than five individuals who were the major contributors to the innovatory component of the submission.

  4. Any organisation, whether in the private, public or charity sectors, may apply for the Award. Although the ultimate ownership of the organisation and the nationality of the nominated individuals are not relevant, the innovatory component of the submission should have a substantial UK content.

  5. The Award consists of a Gold Medal presented to the organisation and Bronze Medals presented to the nominated individuals. The Award also includes a cash prize of £50,000. The allocation of the prize money will be determined by the Academy following consultation with the organisation.

  6. The Award may be withheld if in any year the Academy so decides.

  7. All submissions should be made electronically via the Academy’s website: www.raeng.org.uk/prizes/macrobert. They must be received no later than the last day of January.

  8. In all matters connected with the Award, the decision of the President and Council of the Academy is final.

  9. All copies of a submission provided for consideration shall become the property of The Academy and will not be returned to the originator. All material received and any information given after the initial submission will be treated as confidential. Eventual disposal of any submission will be carried out with due regard for the confidential nature of the contents.

  10. All press releases should be approved by the Academy before being published.
