Visiting Professor Education Innovation Prize

Aims

This prize has been instituted to recognize the work of The Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professors, and particularly one who has made the most significant contribution to the field of Engineering Education. The prize is focused on innovation in the approach they have taken in performing their role.

Prizes

A prize of £10,000 and a trophy will be awarded to the winner. In addition prizes of £1,000 will be awarded to the runner-ups.

Prizes will be paid to the host university to further the work of the Visiting Professors concerned.

Eligibility

A candidate must be an active Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in one of the following schemes:

  • Principles of Engineering Design

  • Engineering Design for Sustainable Development

  • Integrated Systems Design

  • Innovation 

Selection Committee

The award of The Royal Academy of Engineering/National Nuclear Laboratory Visiting Professor Education Innovation Prize is entirely at the discretion of the Selection Committee and any decision of the Committee is final on all matters.

In making their decision, the Selection Committee will review each proposal with respect to the following criteria:

  • What impact has the applicant had on the education of students through an understanding of what engineers do in industry?

  • What impact has the applicant had on encouraging students to consider and take-up an engineering career in industry as a result of their activities within the university?

  • What impact has the applicant made on the other teaching staff with respect to the latest industrial practices and needs of industry?

  • What sustainable impact has the applicant made within the university overall, for example in the shaping of undergraduate degree courses?

Application procedures

Applications can be made on-line from the scheme webpage at www.raeng.org.uk/eip

  • The application form must be completed by a proposer, who will also act as the point of contact for all correspondence.

  • Letters from two independent referees supporting the visiting professor are required. Proposers are responsible for ensuring that these letters are received at the Academy.

  • The deadline date for receipt of the completed application form and both Referees’ letters is 1 June 2009.
