Awards

  • The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering
    The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering is a new global award which celebrates outstanding advances in engineering that have created significant benefit to humanity. The £1 million Prize will be awarded to an individual or team of up to three people, of any nationality, directly responsible for advancing the positive application of engineering knowledge.

    The Academy presents the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award, the UK's premier award for innovation in engineering. The award is presented annually in June.

  • The Royal Academy of Engineering ERA Foundation Entrepreneurs Award
    A prize fund has been established to identify entrepreneurial researchers, working in UK universities, in the field of electro-technology, who are at an early stage in their career. The award will be presented to an individual or team demonstrating considerable entrepreneurial promise and the potential to benefit the UK’s future prosperity.

  • Picture of Special Achievement Award linked to more information about the awardMajor Projects Award
    This award recognises the contribution of an individual working as part of a team involved in a major engineering project that has substantial impact on society.

  • Picture of Sustained Achievement Award linked to more information about the awardSustained Achievement Award
    The Academy's Sustained Achievement Award will be awarded to an engineer, normally resident in the UK, whose sustained achievements over a number of projects have had a profound impact upon their engineering discipline.

  • The Sir George Macfarlane Award
    This Award recognises the potential of younger UK engineers, who have demonstrated excellence in the early stage of their career. This excellence is marked by a quality of leadership and/or technical and scientific attainment that is clearly seen to be outstanding by their employers and organisation.

Medals

The Academy awards a number of medals each year in recognition of excellence in engineering.

  • Picture of Prince Philip medal linked to more information about the medal Prince Philip Medal
    Awarded biennially to an engineer of any nationality who has made an exceptional contribution to engineering as a whole through practice, management or education.

  • Picture of President's medal linked to more information about the medalPresident's Medal
    This is awarded, biennially, to an organisation or individual, that has contributed significantly to the Academy's aims and work through 'initiative in promoting excellence in engineering'.

  • Picture of Sir Frank Whittle medal linked to more information about the medalSir Frank Whittle Medal
    The Medal is awarded to an engineer, normally resident in the UK, for outstanding and sustained achievement which has contributed to the well-being of the nation. The field of activity changes annually. In 2012 the medal will be awarded for Engineering Innovations in Sports Performance Engineering focusing on specialist equipment manufacture and instrumentation, and performance analysis.

  • International MedalPicture of International medal linked to more information about the award
    The International Medal is awarded occasionally to an individual, resident outside of the European Union, for his or her outstanding and sustained personal achievement in the broad field of engineering.

  • Picture of Silver medal linked to more information about the medalSilver Medal
    The Silver Medal was established in 1994 to recognise an outstanding and demonstrated personal contribution to British engineering, which is resulting in successful market exploitation, by an engineer with less than 22 years in full time employment or equivalent on 1 January in year of award and who will normally be Chartered. Up to four medals may be awarded in any one year.

    Awarded to an individual, small team or organisation who has contributed to the Academy's aims and work through their initiative in promoting engineering to the public.
