Nanotechnology in Medicine and Biotechnology - Achievements, Applications and Future Needs
IMechE, London
Nanotechnology will revolutionise healthcare. This exciting new engineering field is defined by the exploitation of novel properties and phenomena of technology developed at the nano scale. The impact of nanotechnology will be demonstrated through presentations covering novel drug synthesis and delivery, cell surgery and therapy, disease diagnosis and prevention, biosensors and medical implants. By drawing together key workers from industry, academia and clinical practice, this event will work as a catalyst to develop both research projects and commercial ideas of nanotechnology in medical applications.

13 November 2008
Bearing Surfaces in Hip Joint Replacement
IMechE, London
The number of joint replacements has grown dramatically over the past decade. With an increasing and ageing population, this is likely to continue. This one-day event will focus on the mechanical and material considerations of the bearing surfaces used in hip joint replacement. The changes in these surfaces have a substantial effect on the long-term survival of the implants − this is clearly of major clinical importance. This symposium will look at the development, testing and use of present and future bearing surfaces, and also the influence of the bearing surface on the design of hip joint replacements.
