Philosophy of Engineering
A series of events exploring philosophical issues in engineering research and practice
In March 2006 The Royal Academy of Engineering embarked on a series of seminars on the
philosophy of engineering. The series began with a meeting of engineers and philosophers who discussed
issues which were of mutual interest, lying at the intersection of philosophy and engineering.
Transcripts of the presentations and discussions at this meeting can be accessed via the links below.
A series of six further meetings is planned, on the following topics:
November 2006: What is engineering, and what is engineering knowledge?
March 2007: Systems Engineering and Engineering Design
July 11 2007: AI and IT - where philosophy and engineering meet (133KB)
September 2007: Metaphysics and engineering (33KB)
December 2007: Engineering and environmental ethics (33KB)
The Royal Academy of Engineering hosted the
second international Workshop on Philosophy and
Engineering on November 10th -12th 2008. A book of
abstracts of papers presented at the workshop is
