H.E. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim on the importance of forming partnerships.
H.E. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim is President of Mauritius and a passionate advocate for science, technology and innovation in Africa. Before her appointment as President in 2015, Dr Gurib-Fakim was a distinguished scientist and entrepreneur. Between 2004 and 2010, Dr. Gurib-Fakim was dean of the University of Mauritius’ science faculty, and subsequently Pro-Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning. Since 2011, she has been managing director of the Centre for Phytotherapy Research (CEPHYR), a private laboratory, and will maintain her involvement during her presidential term.
President Gurib-Fakim is passionate about preserving traditional knowledge and biological resources. In 1994, she compiled the first inventory of aromatic and medicinal plants native to the Mauritius and neighbouring islands. In addition, Dr Gurib-Fakim co-founded AAMPS in 2005, an organization that unites researchers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to develop and monetise remedies based on local medicinal plants in compliance with international standards. In recognition of her contributions to scientific research, she was awarded L’Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science in 2007 among many other prizes.
President Gurib-Fakim has also participated extensively in high- level consultations on environmental issues organised by institutions including The World Bank, the European Union and the United Nations. In April 2016, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General, appointed her as one of the two co-chairs of the High-Level Panel on Water. This panel aims to mobilize effective action to accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6), which focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
