Engineering a Better World brought together global engineering leaders, with international development practitioners and policy makers, industry stakeholders, government officials, and engineers from the developing world to discuss the vital importance of engineering for international development, to improve the interface between the engineering and international development communities, and to take action to build robust engineering institutions across emerging powers and the developing world.

About CAETS

The International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) is a global network of 26 national engineering academies.

Technology and infrastructure are the foundation of social and economic improvement, and key to achieving sustainable development. From developing new, accessible medical technologies to providing clean water and sustainable power for all, it is engineers that tackle the world’s greatest problems and deliver real social and economic change.

The Engineering a Better World conference, hosted in 2016 by the Royal Academy of Engineering at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, focused on how engineering can drive progress towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and transform the future of the world we live in. The conference's overall aim was to align the national capabilities of these academies to global need, and to leverage the academies’ expertise and experience to build engineering capacity across the developing world.

This flagship global engineering conference featured world-class speakers and brought together engineering institutions and international development professionals from around the world. The event explored how these communities can work together to drive social and economic change.

The conference explored the following themes:

  • Building the capacity of engineering institutions as a driver of development
  • Creating and sustaining effective partnerships between engineers, governments, communities and international development stakeholders
