The Impact of Data Management – Dilemmas of Privacy and Surveillance

A new working group has been created by The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Engineering Policy Committee to examine the impact of the growth in the capture and storage of personal data. The group is seeking to explore the experience and implications of new technology on the life of the British citizen. The report published by the group will make suggestions for changes to the regulatory environment and guidelines for operators, institutions, government and individuals about how to deal with the future digital world.

The working group is being chaired by Professor Nigel Gilbert FREng AcSS, of the University of Surrey and the members are drawn from both the Fellows of the Academy and a wider base of academic expertise. They are:

Professor Anne Anderson (University of Glasgow)
Dr James Backhouse (LSE)
Mr David Birch (Consult Hyperion)
Professor William Dutton (University of Oxford)
Professor Brian Collins (Cranfield University)
Dr Ian Forbes (Consultant)
Professor Wendy Hall CBE FREng (University of Southampton)
Professor Andy Hopper FREng (University of Cambridge)
Professor Cliff Jones FREng (University of Newcastle)
Dr Martyn Thomas (University of Oxford)
