Academy announces new Fellows for 2008

Queen Mary 2 designer Stephen Payne, international development champion Jo da Silva from Arup, and John Loughhead, leader of the UK Energy Research Centre, are among the 44 pioneering engineers elected this year to the Royal Academy of Engineering.

The Academy, which promotes the engineering and technological welfare of the UK, has elected leading engineers from commercial engineering including BAE Systems' Simon Howison, UK engineering leader for the Eurofighter Typhoon, and Timothy Leverton, who led JCB's record-breaking Dieselmax land speed project.

Some of the country's most visionary academics are also elected, such as cardiac ultrasound expert Professor Alison Noble of Oxford University and fuel cell pioneer Professor Nigel Brandon of Imperial College London.

Fertility expert Lord Winston, venture capitalist Anne Glover of Amadeus, Ordnance Survey chief Vanessa Lawrence and DFID Chief Scientist Sir Gordon Conway have also been elected as Honorary Fellows.

"Our new Fellows are among the very best engineers working in the UK today," says Academy President Lord Browne of Madingley. "They are pushing the technical boundaries across the most challenging fields from medical imaging to aeronautics and energy technology. Together they demonstrate that engineering is at the heart of modern society."
