Securing a sustainable future is the world’s primary agenda and engineering is at the heart of the answer. Population growth, urbanisation, energy usage and climate change were among the major themes explored by the Academy’s 2005 Hinton Lecturer, Lord Browne of Madingley, in his speech The power of engineering. ‘The hinge between an idea and the realisation of that idea in practice. That is the power of engineering.’ Lord Browne went on to explain how it is ‘detailed engineering work which builds a system to clean water; which creates new drugs to combats AIDS; which develops the technology to fight crime; and creates the systems which allow people to see what is happening around them.’
