International Research Support Schemes

  • Distinguished Visiting Fellowship Scheme

The scheme provides funding to enable an academic engineering department in a United Kingdom (UK) university to be a host for up to a month to a Distinguished Visiting Fellow from an overseas academic centre of excellence. For advice please contact the Scheme Manager.

  • Global Research Awards

Global Research Awards provide an opportunity for engineers currently engaged in research and development to undertake projects in centres of excellence overseas. Projects should focus on activities which could help stimulate wealth creation and improvements in the quality of life, supporting the development of international research networks and encouraging the uptake of globally competitive technology in the UK. The Award covers approximately 50% of the costs of the secondment, up to a ceiling of £40,000. Secondments should be for between three months and a year, taken in modules where required. Allowable costs include salary, travel, subsistence and, if necessary, the additional costs of your family accompanying you on the secondment. Costing operates under the full economic costing regime. For advice please contact the Scheme Manager.

  • International Travel Grants

Grants are provided to help engineering researchers in the UK make study visits overseas, particularly to attend conferences. Grants of up to 50% of approved costs may be awarded for visits of up to two months. The scheme is open to UK nationals and permanent residents of any age who are postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, lecturers involved in research, and chartered engineers in both academia and industry.

  • Newton International Fellowships

The aim of the new scheme is to encourage outstanding, early career postdoctoral researchers based outside the UK to undertake high quality research at UK academic Institutions for a period of two years. Subsequent additional alumni funding will be available for a period of up to ten years to strengthen long term links with researchers overseas.

  • Research Exchanges with China and India

This scheme will enable either a UK academic researcher to spend time at an Indian or Chinese university, or an Indian or Chinese researcher to visit a UK university. There will be two types of award available. Short awards will be available to support exploratory or networking visits of up to one month. Major awards, lasting between three and 12 months, will be offered to support more substantial and longer term projects. The awards will cover the researcher’s living expenses, travel and accommodation.
