These Fellowships are designed to promote unclassified basic research in areas of interest to the intelligence, security and defence community.

  • Publish the results of their research in high quality peer reviewed journals.

The government office for science would normally expect right of use of any IP generated during the course of the fellowship, this will depend on the project in question.

Applications are invited from any science discipline but must address one of the set research topics listed in the guidance notes.

Are there nationality or other eligibility restrictions?

There are no nationality restrictions. For applicants from outside of the EU the Host Institution will be responsible for securing the necessary work permits.

No security vetting is required as part of the Fellowship scheme but by applying to this scheme you are agreeing to be vetted if it becomes necessary during the course of the work. Candidates are asked to declare any reasons why they might not be eligible to work in this area and should be aware that there is currently a 5 year residency requirement for non-UK citizens.

What will the Goverment Office for Science contribute?

The Goverment Office for Science will fund up to £100,000 per year at 80% of Full Economic Costs.

Can the UK IC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship be extended after the initial two-year period?

An optional third year of research may be funded depending on the avaliability of funding and if the project warrants a third year of funding.

Will a mentor be available?

UK IC Postdoctoral Research Fellows will be provided with a RAEng Mentor, usually a Fellow of the Academy who will provide support and advice throughout the Fellowship. The role of the Mentor is to monitor the UK IC Postdoctoral Research Fellow to provide independent expert advice and guidance to the Fellow on their research and their career.

UK IC Postdoctoral Research Fellows will also be supplied with an Intelligence Community Advisor who will advise the Awardee and the Research Advisor on the project.
