The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Summer Soirée

This year the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Summer Soirée and Exhibition, taking place on Thursday 27 June 2013, will be at The University of York.

Engineering: Design for Living Exhibition

The Engineering: Design for Living exhibition will allow Fellows to discover more about the ways in which engineering research in York is influencing lives and contributing to solving a range of global challenges.

It will demonstrate the strategic influence of engineering at the heart of society. Researchers, industrial collaborators, and regional partners will demonstrate that innovative advances in engineering are all around us, sometimes in unexpected ways, and that key scientific – and indeed artistic – achievements could not happen without a significant input from engineering. As a research-led institution, the university has a particular strength in delivering interdisciplinary and innovative collaborations.

Many of the university’s academic departments and research centres are delivering advanced engineering research. The exhibition will highlight a range of stimulating applications and discoveries arising from research and industrial collaborations. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the worlds of acoustics, nanoparticles, neuroimaging, sugar sculptures, orange peel and much more.

The University of York

The University of York is one of the success stories in UK higher education. Since its foundation in 1963, it has powered its way to a position as one of the best research-intensive universities in the UK. Its global reputation is built on an ethos of equal opportunity and advancement for all, underpinned by outstanding international research. This was recently confirmed by two international league tables ranking the best global universities less than 50 years old. York was ranked first in the UK and sixth in the world.

The Ron Cooke Hub

The exhibition will take place at the Ron Cooke Hub at the university’s Heslington East campus extension. This £750m investment in the university’s campus is the largest of its kind in UK higher education and represents in itself a major feat of engineering and design. The Ron Cooke Hub is the flagship building on the campus and is a multidisciplinary research centre and a hub for business and public engagement activities.
