16 September 2005 Annual Research Forum
10.15am - 3.30pm at The Royal College of Physicians, London NW1
This year's Research Forum was held on 16 September at The Royal College of Physicians, London.
The day played host to a number of presentations from Academy-supported researchers and was an excellent showcase for our Research Support schemes. Ample time was given over to networking, allowing attendees to share their experiences as well as making useful contacts for the future.
Our thanks go to Professor Rodney Eatock Taylor, who chaired the event and who is Chairman of the Academy's Committee for Research and Secondment Schemes.
Look out for details of next year's event in future editions of the newsletter!

19 July 2005 UK Focus for Biomedical Engineering Briefing Seminars
Systems Biology - Opportunities for Medical Engineering
2.30pm at 29 Great Peter St, London SW1P
The first of a series of Briefings on biomedical engineering topics for non-specialists took place on 19 July 2005. The seminar entitled 'Systems Biology - Opportunities for Medical Engineering' was jointly chaired by Chairman of the UK Focus for Biomedical Engineering, Professor Richard Kitney OBE FREng and Professor Lionel Tarassenko FREng.
Speakers included Professor Peter Hunter of the University of Auckland, who stepped in at a moment's notice - as a replacement for Professor Denis Noble CBE FRS FMedSci - to deliver a presentation on the work of his team in New Zealand into modelling the function of the heart. Professor Kitney explored the importance of systems biology to the field of engineering and Professor Steve Smith FMedSci discussed the impact of systems methodologies within biology and the practice of clinical medicine. The event was an encouraging start to the Briefings programme and a short report will be available soon on the Academy's website. The next UK Focus for Biomedical Engineering Briefing on the topic of Nanotechnology and Biomedical Engineering will take place in January 2006. For further details please contact the UKFocus Team
