Fellows' Visit
18 September 2006
ROYAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING: ANNUAL REGIONAL SUMMER VISIT, 2006
This year's summer visit was on Monday 18th September and took in two of Sheffield University's new research facilities. We are grateful to Professor Geoffrey Tomlinson FREng for arranging this visit.
In the morning there was a tour of the Kroto Research Institute on the University's North Campus. After lunch at the North Campus we traveled to visit The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), a partnership with Boeing, at Catcliffe, between Sheffield and Rotherham.
The development of the North Campus, formerly the laboratories of the Health and Safety Executive that we visited in 1994, reflects the University's view of the growing importance of a number of critical multi-disciplinary themes and the commitment to provide the infrastructure for such research. The site provides an environment where, in addition to collaborating on specific projects, researchers from different scientific and engineering disciplines can work alongside one another to facilitate broader interaction. www.sheffield.ac.uk/northcampus
AMRC is a multi-million partnership with Boeing which builds on the shared scientific excellence, expertise and technological innovation of the world's leading aerospace company and Sheffield's Faculty of Engineering. AMRC's Director of Research is Professor Keith Ridgway FREng. www.amrc.co.uk
The programme starts at 10.30 am and will finish before 3 pm. It is intended that we shall provide our own transport between the two sites and those Fellows who have not come by car may expect to be given a lift. It has been decided not to organise the usual dinner following the visit.
If you would like to reserve a place on this visit, please reply by email as soon as possible (johnbramley@onetel.com). It may be necessary to limit the size of the party. It would also be helpful if you would indicate if you will not be coming.
There will, of course, be no charge for the visit and details of how to get there, etc, will be sent later.
