Visiting Professors' Scheme

Visiting Professors in Principles of Engineering Design: Review of The Scheme's Development

Most of the proposals from universities selected to participate in the scheme identified three common principal roles for visiting professors: lectures to undergraduates, involvement with undergraduate projects and input to curriculum development. Time and experience has tended to change the relative emphasis being placed on them in practice.

Two roles have become pre-eminent: namely work on students' projects and close co-operation with academic staff on curriculum development.

The value of The Academy's scheme for Visiting Professors in Principles of Engineering Design (reviewed in detail in 1993/94 and updated in 1997/98) has been confirmed by visits to universities and by the positive comments of those involved – both Visiting Professors and university staff. During the course of the review, guidelines were developed to help with the assessment of the impact the introduction of the scheme was having on the teaching of engineering design.
