Visiting Professors' Schemes

This industry into academia technology transfer initiative is based on the experience-led education concept, whereby senior industrial engineers are appointed as Visiting Professors at specific universities to enrich the engineering undergraduate curriculum with the latest industrial technology and practices to enhance the quality and capabilities of UK engineering graduates.

Seven schemes have been run to date, all of which have focused on promoting a particular aspect of engineering design, the fundamental discipline which underpins the wealth creating potential of all engineering innovations, these are:

Visiting Professors' Schemes Events

The Academy holds regular workshops and conferences for those participating in its VP schemes. The purpose is to publicly engage both VPs and their academic contacts for a variety of purposes such as debating issues that might impinge on the schemes or where they can add value to the formulation of policy or the outcome of a specific Academy project.

The Sustainable Development VP scheme held separate annual events from 2000 - 2005. These can be accessed here.

Visiting Professors' Publications

The Academy has published six reports to date to support these schemes, the most recent in April 2012. Educating engineers to drive the innovation economy makes the case that innovation should not be regarded as an extra-curricular activity, but instead become a major part of the curriculum equipping students with the knowhow and mind-set to deliver step changes in addressing the grand challenges that humankind faces in the 21st century.

In January 2010 we published Engineering a low carbon built environment, which introduced the discipline of Building Engineering Physics and the pivotal role it has in reducing carbon emissions to achieve the proposed carbon neutral position for buildings by 2020 and the more challenging 2050 targets.

In June 2007 we published Creating Systems that Work. This lays down six simple principles covering the design of any integrated system. It is intended as a guide for educators, students and practising engineers, and sets out to demystify the design of complex projects.

In September 2005 we issued twelve principles for Sustainable Development to guide practising engineers, illustrated by seven wide ranging case studies.

In February 2005 a separate report summarised lessons learned from 12 years experience of the VP scheme and contains case studies from ten universities.

An earlier publication is an exposition on "Principles of Engineering Design" illustrated by four case studies.

Poster Competition

Between 2005 and 2008 the Academy ran a national student design competition to support the work of its Visiting Professors and promote the concept and benefits of such competitions in UK universities. Click the links below to view the winning posters.
