Visiting Professors' Scheme

This programme fosters industry–academia links and aims to help universities to teach engineering design to undergraduates in a way that relates to real professional practice.

There are four strands to the programme:

Visiting Professors' Scheme Events

The Academy holds regular workshop events for those participating in its VP schemes. The purpose is to publicly engage both VPs and their academic contacts for a variety of purposes such as debating issues that might impinge on the schemes or where they can add value to the formulation of policy or the outcome of a specific Academy project.

The Sustainable Development VP scheme held separate annual events from 2000 - 2005. These can be accessed here.

Visiting Professors' Publications

The Academy has published 4 booklets to support these schemes. The most recent published in June 2007. This lays down 6 simple principles covering the design of any integrated system. It is intended as a guide for educators, students and practising engineers, and sets out to demystify the design of complex projects.

In September 2005 we issued twelve principles for Sustainable Development to guide practising engineers, illustrated by seven wide ranging case studies.

In February 2005 a separate report summarised lessons learned from 12 years experience of the VP scheme and contains case studies from ten universities.

An earlier publication is an exposition on "Principles of Engineering Design" illustrated by four case studies.

Poster Competition

Between 2005 and 2008 the Academy ran a national student design competition to support the work of its Visiting Professors and promote the concept and benefits of such competitions in UK universities. Click the links below to view the winning posters.
