The Nuffield Foundation – Royal
Academy of Engineering Undergraduate Research
Bursaries Programme
This programme provides
bursaries to help outstanding undergraduate
engineering students gain practical research
experience during their summer break.
This programme is made
possible by the support of The Nuffield Foundation.
Aim of the Programme
A strong research base is the
engine of a ‘knowledge economy’. It is critical to
securing the location of high-value business in the
UK and the creation of future employment
opportunities in growth sectors. Engineering
research also assists the commercial exploitation of
advances in science and medicine, strengthening the
UK’s competitive advantage in emerging technologies.
The programme aims to build the UK’s research
capabilities by providing the next generation of
researchers with practical research experience at a
critical point in their education and preparing them
for a future research career.
Who are the bursaries
for?
Applications are invited from:

Undergraduate engineering
students studying engineering, ICT, and other
courses at UK universities which are accredited
by a professional engineering institution.

To be eligible, students must be
able to take up their award during the summer
vacation in the middle years (i.e. 2/3, 2/4 or 3/4)
of their degree. Applications on behalf of first- or
final-year undergraduates, or graduates, will not be
considered.
What does a bursary offer?
Bursaries
provide subsistence support for the student at a
rate of £180.00 per week for research placements
over a period of between 6 and 8 weeks. Bursaries do
not cover research costs or overheads to
organisations supporting placements.
How to apply
Application is by open
competition. The deadline for receipt is 4pm on
26 April 2013. The Academy will plan to let
applicants know the success or otherwise of their
applications by Friday 17 May 2013.

About The Nuffield
Foundation
The Nuffield Foundation is a
charitable trust established by William Morris, Lord
Nuffield, the founder of Morris Motors. It aims to
improve social well-being by funding research and
innovation in education and social policy. It also
builds capacity in science and social science by
investing in the development and progression of
young scientists and social scientists.
Lord
Nuffield wanted to contribute to improvements in
society, including the expansion of education and
the alleviation of disadvantage. He called this the
‘advancement of social well-being’, and emphasised
the importance of education, training and research
in achieving that goal.
