Project Antarctica
James Martin, one of the Best
Programme’s Engineering Leadership Awardees, is to
be the star of a new DVD. As part of his leadership
training, James took part in an expedition to
Antarctica under the guidance of explorer and
conservationist, Robert Swan. With him, he took a
video camera, and documented his trip.
The resulting short film
follows James and a team of young explorers on their
journey from London to Ushuaia, the most southern
city in the world, and then on to Antarctica. Here
they visited Robert Swan’s Education Base on King
George Island and took part in a Leadership on the
Edge course, as well as learning about the
conservation of issues surrounding Antarctica.
In 1991 Antarctica was
designated as a natural reserve devoted to peace and
science, and is governed by very strict rules to
ensure that human activity has no adverse effects on
its environment, its scientific value and its
beauty.
Robert Swan’s courses are
designed to teach participants about the importance
of preserving Antarctica and instill in them
team-building and leadership qualities. James took
full advantage of everything the course had to
offer, and is now continuing with his degree
training at University College London.
