Thinking like an engineer

Implications for the education system

In summer 2013, the Royal Academy of Engineering commissioned the Professor Bill Lucas, Dr Janet Hanson and Professor Guy Claxton of the Centre for Real-World Learning at Winchester University to conduct a study to provide fresh insight into the ways engineers think.

Working with representatives from education and the engineering community the research identified six engineering habits of mind; characteristics which, taken together, describe the ways engineers think and act.

The cultivation of these habits of mind to create the next generation of engineers has wide ranging implications for the UK’s education system.
