Sainsbury Management Fellowships in the Life Sciences: Personal Development Plan
What is a Personal Development Plan
Most professionals
have, or should have, an ultimate career
ambition or career goal. For some the goal
maybe attaining specialist status in a
science or technology, for others reaching
the senior levels of management in a large
company, or even owning a small business.
Whichever route individuals intend to
follow, they cannot rely solely on their
tertiary education plus the indiscriminate
acquisition of knowledge and skills in their
professional work to attain their career
goal.
In today's working
environment, with technology changing
rapidly and streamlined organisations
offering fewer advancement opportunities,
individuals need to take ownership of their
careers. They should set time related career
objectives. For each stage a fist of the
knowledge and skills required should be
drawn up and a resultant training plan
formulated. This in essence is a Personal
Development Plan.
Whenever the word
training is mentioned, most people
automatically think of courses. However,
there are many other ways in which to
acquire new knowledge and skills. These
include: participating in conferences,
seminars and workshops; secondments to other
departments within your organisation, or to
another organisation closely linked to yours
or involvement in a voluntary activity -
individuals can improve their interpersonal
skills greatly by becoming involved in
committee The options are limitless.
