Schemes for Professional Engineers
Sainsbury Management Fellowships
The Sainsbury Management
Fellowship Scheme funded by the Gatsby
Charitable Foundation, enables engineers of
high career potential to undertake full time MBA courses at major
international business schools. Since 1987, the
scheme has supported more than 250 engineers.
Objectives
The overall objective of the
scheme is to improve the economic performance of UK
engineering, manufacturing and construction
businesses by providing a human resource of highly
motivated engineers, who have complemented their
technical qualifications and skills with a first
class business education in an international
environment.
A Sainsbury Management
Fellowship is a prestigious award; it is expected
that award holders will go on to become senior
managers and leaders in UK industry and make a major
contribution to the economic prosperity of the
nation. The selection of award holders is directed
to this end.
Nature of the award
Each Fellowship has a
financial value of £30,000. Fellowships are
tenable for full time MBA study at the following business schools:
The scheme does not support the
study of part time, distance learning or executive MBA courses.
Who is eligible?
A suitable candidate will:
-
be a UK citizen normally domicile in the United Kingdom;
-
ideally have a first or upper second class honours degree in
an engineering subject;
-
have Chartered Engineer
status or be making substantial progress towards
it; Chartered Engineers will be given priority
for panel interview places.

The award of a
Sainsbury Management Fellowship will depend
on the candidate obtaining a place at the
chosen business school using the school’s
normal application procedure.
Applicants should
consult the instructions to applicants
before completing an
application form.
Application procedure
The shortlisting stage may
take up to four weeks from a completed application
being received. Once shortlisted candidates have
secured a place at business school, they are placed
in the candidate pool and ready to be invited to a
Selection Panel. It is at the Selection Panel where
the final decision is reached on the award of a
Sainsbury Management Fellowship. Invitations to
attend Selection Panels are subject to the
availability of places and at the discretion of the
Academy.
Selection Panels will be held this year in London on:
-
24 June
-
15 July
-
5 August
-
19 August
-
14 October
Applications can be made in
conjunction with an employer or by an individual
acting independently. Where an employer supports an
application, it is helpful if a covering letter
confirming this with outline plans for the
candidate’s subsequent career development is
provided. Applications may be made at any time but
preferably four months before the intended date of
entry to business school, regardless of whether a
place has been secured.
Selection Panel
The award of a Sainsbury
Management Fellowship is entirely at the discretion
of the Selection Panel and any decision of the Panel
is final on all matters.
