National Higher Education STEM Programme

Overview
The
National HE STEM Programme is a three-year
initiative funded by the Higher Education Funding
Councils for England and Wales (HEFCE/HEFCW). The
Programme aims to increase and widen participation
in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) and enhance the skills and knowledge base of
the workforce in these areas. Although focused
around the STEM subjects, it will primarily
concentrate its support on the disciplines of
Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics with
concomitant benefits to the STEM
sector as a whole.
The Programme will take forward activities in three related strands:
-
Activities to widen
participation within the STEM disciplines at HE
level amongst students of traditional age
-
HE curriculum developments
focusing upon course delivery and design,
student support, and knowledge and skills
-
Activities to encourage those currently within the workforce and society without a Level 4 qualification to engage in further study to develop enhanced knowledge and skills.
The National HE STEM Programme will:
-
adopt a holistic approach
to increasing and widening participation amongst
school-age students
-
examine the current
undergraduate curriculum and explore the
teaching of the critical STEM skills to ensure
graduates of all ages are adequately prepared
for their workplace
-
encourage Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
to engage with employers on a regional basis and
develop flexible and tailored programmes of
study to meet regional skills needs
-
deliver this programme in collaboration with six regional spokes, four professional bodies and their subject
centres

London Engineering Project (LEP)
The London Engineering Project (LEP), managed by the Royal Academy of Engineering, was the pilot project for the engineering strand of this
Programme. The National HE STEM Programme will be taking ideas, approaches and effective practice learnt thorough the LEP's
work and adapt it for the needs of the HEIs involved with the National HE STEM Programme.
The London Engineering
Programme won an award at the London Education
Partnership Awards on Monday, 7th June 2010 under
the category Inspiring journeys: excellent
professional practice in curriculum support for
STEM. The LEP shone out as an example of a
well-rounded partnership between universities,
employers, third sector organisations, and primary
and secondary schools, which delivered improvements
across all phases to widen participation in
engineering in higher education.

Role of the Royal Academy of Engineering in National HE STEM Programme
The Royal Academy of Engineering is leading the engineering strand of the
Programme, building on the effective practice of the London Engineering Project. It will support the National HE STEM
Programme through collaborations with the HEIs
to encourage the exploration of new approaches to
recruiting students and delivering programmes of
study in engineering. It will enable the transfer of
good practice across the HE STEM sector, facilitate
its wider adoption, and encourage innovation. The
Programme will not seek to undertake short-term
interventions, but will focus upon sustainable
activities with the potential to achieve long-term
impact within the Higher Education sector.
The Royal
Academy of Engineering will work closely with
Higher
Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre at Loughborough University to achieve the desired result during this whole project.
Call for project proposals for engineering activity
The Royal Academy of has received funding through
the Programme to support engineering activity in
England and Wales. Working in collaboration with the
HEA
Engineering Subject Centre, we are pleased to
announce this invitation to HE staff involved in
Engineering Education to bid for funding and support
for development projects in support of the aims of
the Programme. Proposals will be accepted from any
Welsh or English HEI working in collaboration with
the Programme partner HEIs and/or the Academy. The
Programme will not seek to undertake short-term
interventions, but will focus upon sustainable
activities with the potential to achieve long-term
impact within the Higher Education sector.

Engineering Graduates for
Industry: Enhancing Effective Practice in Employer
Engagement
Day & Date: Thursday, 16th
September 2010
Venue: The Royal Academy of
Engineering, 3 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y
5DG
Organised by: The Engineering
Subject Centre and the Royal Academy of Engineering
Summary of the Day: This
seminar will provide an opportunity for employers
and engineering academics to develop ideas on how to
build effective collaborations in engineering degree
programmes.
The aims of the event are:
-
to share effective
practice in increasing industry input into the
engineering curriculum, ranging from small-scale
interventions in teaching to radical change
across engineering programmes
-
to build effective
collaborations between industry and
universities.
The event will be underpinned
by examples of effective practice drawn from the
London Engineering Project and the case studies in
the
Engineering Graduates for Industry report (2306KB) . There
will also be an opportunity to discuss potential
ideas for employer engagement funding under the HE
STEM programme.
This event will be of interest
to employers of engineering graduates and those
responsible for programme design and curriculum
development. Delegates will leave the event with
ideas and contacts that will enable them to increase
employer engagement with universities.
This event is offered free of
charge.
