Innovation is the key to solving the world's greatest challenges 26 June 2009
Innovation in Action was the theme of the Academy's 2009 Annual Soiree and Exhibition hosted by Cranfield University. More than 200 guests attended the event in the presence of the Senior Fellow, HRH Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh. Cranfield University brought together over 40 exhibits, bringing together expertise from both of its campuses and all its schools, to showcase the breadth and depth of its extensive experience. Highlights included a unique vertical wind turbine, in the design of which Cranfield is a partner, as well as the award-winning Grand Challenge robot which is set to help frontline troops detect hostile forces....
UK public intrigued but cautious about new field of synthetic biology 18 June 2009
The UK's first public dialogue on the emerging field of synthetic biology, published in a report today by the Academy, has found members of the public expressing great interest in the prospect of designing micro-organisms that can help to manufacture medicines and biofuels. Some areas of real concern exist about the potential release of modified bacteria into the environment to clean up contaminated land and about any proposal to create or modify higher life forms or humans...

Engineering, physics, chemistry and mathematics departments in England and Wales are set to receive additional support with this week's announcement of £21 million additional funding from the Higher Education Funding Councils for England and Wales.

Engineering Explained in Cardiff wins Academy Award 09 June 2009
An innovative project that uses live shows to help inspire young people about engineering will be given a prestigious medal today bythe Academy. Lord Robert Winston, an Honorary Fellow of the Academy, will present the Academy's Public Promotion of Engineering Medal this evening to Cardiff-based Science Made Simple for their Engineering Explained initiative, which looks at the relevance of engineering in all aspects of our lives - from music, playgrounds, and even nappies - through to the supersonic car project Bloodhound...
Do engineering advances in sport threaten fair play? 08 June 2009
An engineer who analyses football free kicks and how to build cricket pitches is to become the Academy's first Fellow in Public Engagement in Engineering. Dr David James is Senior Sports Engineer at Sheffield Hallam University, where he uses cutting edge techniques to engineer gains in athletic performance for sports equipment manufacturers and elite performers. Now he will spend a year exploring the societal impact of his work, examining the ethics of engineering athletic performance and gathering public opinion on these issues. His work will be funded by the Academy through its Ingenious grants programme for public engagement with engineering...
