Investor in People
On 15 November 2005 The Royal
Academy of Engineering received accreditation of the
Investor in People standard. Investors in People (IiP)
is the national standard by which best practice in
continuous organisational development is measured.
Independent research has consistently shown that the
IiP standard provides real benefits to organisations
of all sizes and across all sectors. There are
currently over 37,000 IiP recognised organisations
in the UK, employing over 27% of the UK workforce.
The IiP standard was developed
during 1990 by the National Training Task Force in
partnership with leading national businesses,
personnel, professional and employee organisations
such as the Confederation of British Industry (CBI),
Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Chartered
Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The
current version of the IiP standard pays greater
attention to cultural change and places emphasis on
staff development and strong leadership throughout
the management tiers of an organisation.
Investor in People status
brings public recognition for real achievements and
helps to attract the best quality job applicants.
The additional benefits an organisation can gain
from the standard include the opportunity to review
current policies and practices against a recognised
benchmark; a framework for planning, strategy and
action; a structured way to improve the
effectiveness of training and development
activities.
The culmination of 12 months
intensive work and commitment by all members of the
secretariat, this is a clear indication that the
Academy staff consists of highly trained and
motivated individuals. Within the Academy, the IiP
is being implemented via a programme of training and
development for all staff, which addresses key areas
of business including: employment law; advanced
human resource management; coaching and various IT
applications. All staff are engaged in the
programme; including the Chief Executive; much of
which is sourced from within the Academy. This
approach not only makes the training and development
programme cost effective, but also successfully
utilises staff knowledge and skills.
