Tony Gibbs is a pioneer in promoting safe architectural and engineering
designs that can withstand natural hazards and has enjoyed a distinguished career in the West
Indies and beyond. In 2007 he received the United Nations Sasakawa Award for his significant
contribution to hazard awareness and disaster risk reduction in the Caribbean and throughout
the Americas. He advises the UN and the Pan –American Health Organisation on hospital
safety, retrofitting existing healthcare buildings and designing new ones to prevent essential
infrastructure being destroyed or made inoperable by earthquakes and hurricanes.
