Professor Sir John Beddington CMG HonFREng FRS
Government Chief Scientific Adviser
As he took over the GCSA role, Sir John Beddington immediately recognised
the challenge of global food security and set about initiating research to address it. He has
led public debate on this and the related issues of climate change, energy, water and
demography. Since being in post, the GCSA had led on providing scientific advice to
Government on Civil Contingencies including during the 2009 swine flu outbreak, the 2010
volcanic ash incident, and the emergency at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011. He
has helped to ensure that the use of science and engineering in government is now a widely
shared priority across departments, all Departments of State now have a Chief Scientific
Adviser . He has improved the status and use of engineering in policy-making, as reflected
for example in work on decarbonising the built environment and on climate change mitigation
in the energy sector.
Prior to his appointment as GCSA, Sir John was Professor of Applied
Population Biology and headed the main departments of environmental science and technology
at Imperial College London. His main area of research has been the application of biological
and economic analysis to problems of natural resource management.
