Professor of Chemical Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering and
Advanced Materials, Newcastle University
A world leader in the field of catalytic and transport mechanisms in
ceramic membrane reactors and solid oxide fuel cells, Ian Saxley Metcalfe’s paper on
the thermodynamics of catalyst promotion is in the top ten most-cited articles in the field,
while his textbook on chemical reactor engineering is in great demand, having sold more than
5,000 copies. A researcher in catalysis for over 25 years, he focuses on applying chemical
engineering to problems in the area of catalysis and high temperature membranes.
