Professor Hugh Spikes FREng CEng FIMechE FSTLE
Professor of Lubrication, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial
College London
Hugh Spikes’ team is one of the world's largest university-based
tribology research groups, and receives considerable support from industry in Europe, America
and Japan. He has made major contributions to our understanding of the contribution of lubricant
additives to film formation, friction and wear. The group is working to identify new additives
which will reduce the environmentally-damaging emissions from engines. This is helping to
improve quality of life, especially in cities and for those with respiratory problems such as
asthma. A new nano-tribology and bio-tribology collaboration aims to develop physically
realistic models of human joint lubrication in order to improve the tribological performance
of replacement hip joints.
