Professor of Surface Engineering, Department of Materials Science and
Engineering, University of Sheffield
 Renowned as a pioneering innovator of environmentally-friendly
plasma-based surface engineering process technologies, Allan Matthews’ developments
are benefitting many industrial sectors through enhanced product quality and performance,
especially in relation to friction and wear behaviour. He has studied coatings including
metals, ceramics and nanocomposites of combined phases which have a wide range of functional
uses such as biomedical and optical. An expert in his field, he has co-authored several
books.
