Engineering matters to us all. By transforming ideas into innovations, creating new services and improving the very fabric of society, engineering transforms lives across the world. The Royal Academy of Engineering brings the most successful and talented engineers into their Fellowship for a shared purpose: to advance and promote excellence in engineering for the benefit of society. The 1,500 Fellows, International Fellows and Honorary Fellows are leaders right across engineering – in business, universities and public institutions.

The day-to-day management of the Academy is undertaken by the Chief Executive who is responsible for maximising the contribution of the Fellows and being a confident and articulate spokesperson on the organisation’s behalf. The Chief Executive will engage extensively across the whole engineering community, including the professional institutions, business and academia. The Chief Executive leads the team of some 90 staff, is functionally responsible to the Trustee Board and works closely to support the President in the performance of her role.

The Academy seeks an individual with outstanding leadership, management and communication skills. The successful candidate will need to have substantial experience of managing complex organisations in a relevant sector, together with a strong strategic perspective and business acumen. Awareness and deep understanding of the engineering landscape, engineering policy and engineering education and training are essential, as is an understanding of what motivates the UK engineering communities in business and in academia.

Few positions in UK engineering provide such an opportunity to engage so broadly and to have such impact for the wider public benefit.
